At least 12 people died and an undetermined number of others were injured early Sunday morning in Vedia locality of Buenos Aires when a tanker had a head-on collision with a passenger van.
Buenos Aires authorities said that the deadly accident occurred on national route 7, and the two vehicles involved were traveling on opposite directions.
The police said that those killed were all passengers on the van, whose identities are still being verified.
They added that the tanker apparently went out of its way and crashed into the van. Sources with the rescue team said that at the time of the crash, visibility on the highway appeared to be " normal."
The police have detained the driver of the tanker for further investigation.
